Taffeta

Taffeta is the most basic label weave construction. Usually fairly low density, it is one of the more economical qualities available. It is a lightweight label with average text and logo definition, but is very popular with retro and vintage style brands.

Satin

Satin weave has a smooth, luxurious feel. The warp threads are dominant on the label face, and because looms are only set up with either black or white warp yarns, black and white are the most common ground colours for satin labels.

A satin label made with a white warp yarn can be tinted by using a strongly coloured weft - e.g. if we use a red weft in a white warp, the resulting label would have a pink tint in the ground. When using a black warp yarn, even with a strongly coloured blue weft, the label just looks black. So if anything other than a black, white
or pale tinted ground colour is needed, a satin label is not the right choice of weave.

Depending on the lustre of the warp yarn used, a bright, shiny look or a more matt look can be achieved, both with that luxurious satin feel.

Twill

Twill, like taffeta is often a relatively low definition label. It is characterised by the trademark diagonal lines in the weave. Ground colours can be made stronger or more muted depending on whether a reverse (warp) or standard (weft) twill weave is used. There are also several different ways to execute a twill weave to alter the look and feel of the label, like 2x1, 3x1, 2x2 and ‘broken’ twills for example.

Reverse Satin

As the name suggests, this is a reverse (or ‘upside-down’) version of the satin weave construction. This time, the weft yarns are more dominant on the label face, so we no longer have the luxuriously smooth satin feel from the warp yarns, but stronger ground colours are possible as a result.

Satin Grosgrain

Satin Grosgrain is a visually striking label quality, made by lifting and dropping alternate warp threads over a certain number of wefts to create the characteristic ribbed effect and smooth feel. Due to its tightly woven nature, Grosgrain weave is sturdy yet flexible. As with plain satin weave, because warp yarns are completely dominant on the face, black or white are the most frequently seen label colours, although light ‘tints’ are again possible.

Weft Grosgrain

This weave type uses weft yarns to create a horizontal rib effect instead of the vertical rib of the Satin Grosgrain. Because weft yarns are used, it is possible to have very strong, solid colours in the ground.

Damask

Damask is easily the most popular weave type today for woven labels. The relatively high density of the weave, and the fact that the weft yarns are dominant on the face, allows for strong ground colours and good detail in text and logos.

Satin Damask

Satin Damask is similar to Damask in appearance but the thread density is high in both the warp and the weft direction (only the weft density is high in a standard Damask), meaning even better detail is achievable in logos and text.

High Defintion

High Defintion labels basically have a damask-type weave construction, but the use of finer weft yarns allows for even higher density than a standard damask, resulting in extremely high levels of text and logo detail, and solid, accurate ground colours.

Satin High Defintion

This is the ultimate quality if you are looking for a prestige label. Fine yarns in both the warp and weft direction create the highest possible levels of definition for intricate logo and text execution.
